Players, officials and administrators from all participating nations will support the IRB’s Keep Rugby Clean campaign by warming up in Keep Rugby Clean branded t-shirts in preparation for round four matches on Wednesday, June 17 at the IRB TOSHIBA Junior World Championship 2009 in Japan.
The concerted show of support across all teams and all venues highlights the Game’s pledge to keep doping out of Rugby.
“Keep Rugby Clean is supported by every player and team, and operates at all Age Grade IRB tournaments. Awareness of drugs and their impact coupled with familiarity of testing procedures are essential for player development” said IRB Anti-Doping Manager Tim Ricketts.
The WADA supported education programme conducted at the IRB TOSHIBA Junior World Championship 2009 has involved each team receiving individual training and education, with an education folder translated into their language which includes such information as the sample collection procedure, information on TUEs (Therapeutic Use Exemptions), dangers of nutritional supplements and social drugs. Each player also undertook the WADA anti-doping quiz and received a Keep Rugby Clean t-shirt for their efforts.
The players at the IRB TOSHIBA Junior World Championship are joining fellow Age Grade players who made the same commitment at the IRB Junior World Rugby Trophy in Kenya in April.
The IRB’s Keep Rugby Clean campaign has the support of a number of key international players, including Felipe Contepomi of Argentina, France’s Vincent Clerc, Uale Mai of Samoa and South Africa’s former IRB Player of the Year Bryan Habana.
The IRB’s Anti-Doping Programme started in 2002 and since then approximately 6,480 players and team management have received anti-doping education at IRB Age Grade tournaments.
The IRB has conducted a total of 1,685 tests (excluding 2009) in relation to its Age Grade Championships since 2002, including both In and Out of Competition which to date has resulted in a total of six anti-doping rule violations.
