Pumas coach Phelan to join U20s in camp
Argentina beat Australia and France at JWC 2012 to top their pool

Argentina Under 20s will continue their preparations for IRB Junior World Championship 2013 with a four-day training camp in Rosario from Wednesday to Sunday.

Los Pumitas were one of the surprise packages of JWC 2012 with victories over France and Australia taking them to a first ever semi-final and ultimately fourth place finish after defeats by hosts South Africa and Wales.

The class of 2013 will be hoping to match if not better that performance and with Pumas coach Santiago Phelan in attendance the first few days it is a chance to stake their claims as stars of the future for Argentina.

Argentina have fielded more JWC graduates than any other nation with 28 in total, including prop Juan Figallo, scrum half Martín Landajo and fly half cum centre Nicolás Sanchez who were all involved in Los Pumas’ debut season in The Rugby Championship in 2012.

Bernardo Urdaneta and Rodolfo Ambrosio will coach Los Pumitas at JWC 2013 in France and taking it step by step as they prepare for that tournament and their traditional warm-up matches against South Africa Under 20s.

“We will continue working as we have done on the fundamentals,” said Ambrosio. “This year the Pumas coaching and technical staff have been with us a good bit at each camp and the constant contact is very nice, enabling us to exchange views and also for the growth of the players.

“Our training and working method is basically the same as it has been in previous camps. We will work based on certain concepts that we want players to respect. After this camp we will define the list for the tour of South Africa, but we want to go step by step, working on a daily basis.”

Argentina will face Wales, Scotland and Samoa in Pool D at JWC 2013 with only the winner guaranteed a place in the semi-finals.
