Final: Italy 36-7 Japan
Italy cruised to victory in the IRB Junior World Rugby Trophy final, defeating Japan 36-7 at Slava Stadium in Moscow.
Italy captain Tommaso Benvenuti set the tone with a try after just two minutes before Antonio Denti added another eight minutes in. Alberto Chillon converted Benvenuti's try and added a further penalty in the last minute of the first half to send his side into half time 15-0 ahead.
Any thoughts of a Japan recovery after the break were quashed inside the first eight minutes, when first Michele Mortali and then Gabriele Cicchinelli touched down. Chillon converted both to stretch Italy's lead to 29-0.
Mao Enoki scored a consolation try for Japan midway through the second half, but Italy and Benvenuti celebrated the title with a try two minutes from time.
3rdplace play-off: Romania 20-23 Russia (after suden death extra time)
Denis Kukishev's sudden death extra time penalty secured third place for hosts Russia against Romania, the first time an international-level match has ever been decided in this manner.
Romania's Gabriel Conache opened the scoring with a drop goal three minutes into the first half. The fly half added four more penalties during the course of the match, but also missed six more penalty attempts, a drop goal and a conversion.
Russia's Denis Simplikevich scored the only try of the first half, before Alexey Skobiola and Alexander Razumov added two more for the hosts after the break.
Conache's successful kicks kept Romania in touch before Ionut Niacsu scored his second try of the tournament to give his side a three-point cushion with 13 minutes remaining.
Kukishev responded with a penalty four minutes before full time to draw Russia level. Conache missed a penalty before the referee's whistle and a drop goal attempt went wide during extra time, before Kukishev's sudden death penalty made history.
5th place play-off: Uruguay 13-11 Canada
Agustin Ormaechea's last-minute penalty against Canada ensured Uruguay claimed fifth place and provided a complete contrast in emotions for the Uruguayans, who had lost to Italy in similar circumstances in the last round.
Canada had lead 6-3 after a tryless first half, thanks to two Connor Braid penalties against a single Ormaechea effort.
Jeffrey Hassler extended Canada's lead to eight points with a try in the first minute of the second half, but Guzman Carissimi responded for Uruguay midway through the second period.
Ormaechea added the conversion before his dramatic late intervention.
Zimbabwe rounded off their tournament with a win against Papua New Guinea, to clinch seventh place.
In an attractive match, full of open, running rugby, Zimbabwe always had the edge from once Graham Kaulback added a try shortly after Charles Jiji's penalty early in the first half.
Zimbabwe scored five more tries, including two by number 8 Marco Mama. Papua New Guinea scored three tries in total including one for Jackson Pato Junior to add to the two he scored in the last round against Romania.
