Uruguay will fly the flag for South America at the IRB Junior World Rugby Trophy 2014 in Hong Kong after beating Chile 25-7 in the decisive match of the CONSUR Junior A Championship on Saturday.
The two rivals, who both played in this year’s Trophy – Chile as hosts and Uruguay as South America’s representatives, had both lost heavily to Argentina and beaten hosts Brazil to set up the expected decider on the final day.
Uruguay opened the scoring in the fourth minute through flanker Manuel Castro’s try and wing Andres Rocco added a second to give Los Teritos a 12-0 lead after quarter of an hour.
Chile did get on the scoreboard with a try from prop Benjamin Fleischmann to trail by five points at half-time, but that was as close as they got with two penalties from Manuel Blengio and a try from full back Mathias Pla sealing the victory for Uruguay.
Uruguay will now join JWRT 2014 hosts Hong Kong, Canada, Tonga, USA, Asian champions Japan and African champions Namibia in the tournament, leaving only one place for the European champion which will be known in early November.
Argentina – featuring a number of players from their Junior World Championship 2013 squad – were again crowned champions after topping 80 points for the third time in the tournament, beating Brazil 83-3 after earlier wins over Uruguay (84-0) and Chile (90-0).
