Scandinavian battle set to impact rankings

The rugby world's eyes were on the Danish capital of Copenhagen last week with the International Olympic Committee's decision to include Rugby Sevens in the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro.

This weekend Denmark's national side will hope to make headlines on the pitch by maintaining their unbeaten record against Scandinavian rivals Norway when they meet in Division 3B of the European Nations Cup.

Denmark triumphed 20-18 when the sides last met in April - the first time the margin has been less than 20 points in a decade - and will hope to make it a double with victory away from home at the Fana Stadium in Bergen on Saturday.

The visitors are the higher placed in the IRB World Rankings, sitting 21 places and 4.85 rating points above Norway in 65th. Denmark will climb three places with victory - regardless of the winning margin - above Colombia, Senegal and Cayman Islands to their highest position in the last year.

Norway will slide three or four places in defeat, guaranteed to slip below Bahamas, Tahiti and Bosnia & Herzegovina, but also Nigeria if Denmark were to win by more than 15 points in Bergen.

However, with the motivation of the first rugby international to go out on Norwegian national television, the visitors have plenty to gain if they can record that illusive first victory over Denmark, having lost their 10 previous meetings.

Norway will surge up seven places to 79th with victory, resulting in a one place fall for St Lucia, Israel, Guam, Swaziland, Bulgaria, India and Jamaica. They could also climb above Cameroon with an emphatic victory.

Huge potential gain for Austria

A defeat for Denmark would see them slide six or seven places with Slovenia, Guyana, Malaysia, Niue, Thailand, Peru and potentially also Andorra the beneficiaries of a Norwegian victory.

Slovenia are also in action this weekend, entertaining Austria in Ljubljana and knowing that even defeat will see them return to the top of Division 3B after losing that spot with a first defeat of the campaign in Hungary last Saturday.

However the only way Slovenia will be able to improve their ranking of 66th - and regain some of the five places lost with that Hungary loss - is if they beat Austria and Norway also beat Denmark in Bergen.

This is because Slovenia currently lie 24 places and 7.55 rating points above their visitors, so even a fifth successive victory over 93rd ranked Austria and repeat of the 25-9 victory when they last met in Ljubljana 11 years ago will have no impact on either side's rating.

A first loss to Austria since a 50-3 reverse in June 1998 will, though, result in another drop in the IRB World Rankings for Slovenia be it either six or 11 places depending on the margin of defeat. Austria will climb three or four places with a first victory in Division 3C in this campaign, but could rise as high as 81st with a winning margin of more than 15 points.
