Venezuela are the biggest climbers in the latest IRB World Rankings with a four place elevation to 63rd on the back of a slender 29-25 victory over Peru on the final day of the South American B Championship in Paraguay.

The Venezuelans had gone into the match without a win in the four-team tournament and provisionally behind Peru after they had upset the higher ranked Colombia 28-27 in the second round of matches on Tuesday.

However, they now sit 63rd with Denmark, Latvia, China and Andorra all sliding one as a result of Venezuela’s gains. Peru do end the week one place higher than they began it in 71st, having swapped places with Barbados, but it could have been so much higher had they not lost to Venezuela.

Colombia had started the tournament brightly by beating Venezuela, but two defeats in the last seven days – against Peru and champions Paraguay 25-15 – mean they have slipped four places to 60th, more than cancelling out their gains from victory on day one.

Paraguay won all three matches to retain the title but with their opponents ranked at least 20 places below them their gain in the last seven days is just three hundredths, leaving them still occupying 38th place.
