IRB backs Conference on the Science and Practice of Rugby
The International Conference on the Science and Practice of Rugby will be hosted by the QUT Centre for Rugby Studies in conjunction with Queensland Rugby Union and will take place during the game's showpiece event in Australia later this year.
The Rugby World Cup is considered the third biggest sporting event on the globe - behind the Summer Olympics and Soccer World Cup.
The International Rugby Board - the sport's world governing body - informed conference organisers this week that the RWC have fully endorsed the three-day event at Brisbane's Sheraton Hotel (November 5 to 7).
It will fall between two pool matches (November 1 and 2) and two quarter-finals (November 8 and 9) to ensure most of rugby's heavy-hitters will be in town including former Wallaby coach Rod Macqueen who is already secured as a keynote speaker.
Macqueen - the most successful coach in Wallaby history - will lead a wide range of high profile and professional speakers who will focus on both the practice and science of rugby.
The four main themes of the conference will be coaching, sports science, sports medicine and contemporary issues in the sport and the program has been designed to cater for anybody associated with rugby at any level.
Sports science and sports medicine professionals, administrators, coaches, referees, club officials, university lecturers and researchers will find the event beneficial as the conference will take time to look at the many advances the game has made across the board.
Other topics on the agenda will include advances in shoulder surgery, risk management, media relations, drug use in rugby, heat stress and acclimatisation, spine injury prevention, advances in rugby protective equipment and treatment of head injuries.
A case study on Tim Horan's stunning comeback from a career-threatening knee injury will also be presented by the medical team which helped the all-time great Wallaby centre return for the 1995 World Cup in South Africa.
Registration - Earlybird registration fee (before July 31) - $649, standard (after August 1) - $749, students- $399, single day - $349
